"This is the only book on the subject that is easy to follow." D. Gold "Nice work, the most coherent I have seen in English." J.P. Hayes This book describes functional practices for the Chinese internal martial art known as Baguazhang (Eight Trigram Palm). Martial art practice is more than the study of physical movement. This book introduces Bagua and Chinese medicine theories in their historical context. A series of standing and floor exercises stress good internal martial art practice before introducing the circle walking practice of Baguazhang. Three "Stepping" patterns and eight "Standing Palms" prepare you for the ten classical postures of Sun Style Baguazhang. Advance students will find my unique Internal Power exercise routine that developed from my personal journey with the internal martial arts. With so much material at your disposal, I encourage you to develop your own practice routines and remain engaged in a life long journey of self evolution.

Earth Dragon Canon Walking Martial Arts and Self Evolution Troy Williams 9780981967523 Books

I recommend this book as an authentic book from an authentic practice. The author does not present as a master and claims no lineage or secret transmission of secrets. He is honest, has spent years observing his self and his surroundings, and has written a book of his insights. Like all genuine teachers he teaches his practice. This book will have the most utility for people who share a culture with the author: self-educated Americans who like to learn from books at home. The practice that he teaches is far safer for a desk worker than any other I've seen. I enthusiastically recommend this book to introverts who are only likely to attend a class or hire a teacher after they have developed a home practice and found some competency on their own. I believe having a daily practice is more important than what is in that practice, and this book has a stronger chance of unlocking a daily practice in a DIY-culture American than any other Bagua or internal martial arts book I am aware of.
As the work of a budding American Taoist, this book excels. It is not "real" Bagua but it is clearly rooted in the author and the books he learned from. He speaks to what he knows and doesn't claim deeper understand than he demonstrates. He poured his self into this book: respect!
If you buy the book and adopt it into your practice, have faith that the "bad habits" some Bagua teacher may later correct in your form later did not significantly place your health or enlightenment at risk. Mr. Williams did a fine job with his voice and tone and his compassion shines through.
This book should be required reading for any senior student in the US who aspires to become a genuine teacher. Learn from his approach and tone and the example he sets. He is Troy, no more, no less. I detect no mask in his prose.

Earth Dragon Canon Walking Martial Arts and Self Evolution Troy Williams 9780981967523 Books Reviews

This is not a book for any serious Bagua practitioner. Though I will give the author credit for his efforts in trying to understand the art without the benefit of a real teacher, he is seriously lacking in much of the fundamental body methods that define internal martial arts. The author tries to make up for this lack with supplemental exercises, which while is commendable, doesn't quite cut it. At best this is a very shallow introduction to a very deep and complex art. The author is entitled to his own beliefs, but his insistence on removing the martial aspects from this art does it a great disservice. We have already seen how such thinking has emasculated much the art of Taijiquan in America. It pains me [ironically] to see someone trying to do the same to Bagua.

Things I liked The writing is done well, easy to read and doesn't get too boring. Well designed.

Things I didn't like Too many pages spent on non-bagua exercises. The person demonstrating the Bagua postures (the author?) doesn't demonstrate any maturity (shenfa) in the art. The author's insistence on making the art non-functional.
A book worth the time to read and 're-read. I've had it almost a year now and found it to be an excellent guide and reference.
was OK as an introduction to this particular style. More of an overview of circle walking. It was worth reading for some background. It was not as thorough as I expected. Certianly not a canon on the art.
I may be a relative noobie to the "internal martial arts" but I've been reading martial arts materials for about 30 years now, and I'm not sure I've ever read a more clear and down to earth book on martial arts than this one. When considering the topic is Bagua, and how esoteric so much of the material available about Bagua seems to be, the clarity and readability of this book seems even more remarkable. Coupled with the author's website (currently having some hosting problems, but he's doing his best to keep the videos available) this book is simply a must-have. The author has already cleared up a lot of my questions for me, as well as made me feel better about my own "no balogney, please!" attitude.

If you want a very readable, information-packed book that doesn't try to dwell on the mysticism and traditions and lore that so many books and websites I've seen succumb to, then this should be an excellent choice for you. I'm sure hoping he puts out some more books.

Now you're not going to get a lot of "combat oriented" stuff here, and the author goes to some length to try explain his attitudes on this and other topics, which I respect, though somewhat disagree with, having had trouble brought to me on more than one occasion. However, I've never had a workout for my back that came close to doing what walking the circle does, so I can only laud this book highly just on the benefits it can provide as a workout alone. Then again, all of this stuff was developed with "martial" aspects in mind, so one way or the other, I guess a workout is a workout.
