Messing With Tourists Stupid Answers To Stupid Questions, is the first book from Stand Up Comedian Alex Stokes. During the past year, Alex spent time talking to tourists in the extremely popular tourist destination of Gatlinburg, TN. After hearing hundreds of crazy and idiotic questions, he decided to answer them in his own, sarcastic way. The conversations in this book will keep you laughing, while shaking your head at humanity.

Aside from the time that the remastered version of the seminal rock album "Destroyer" by Kiss was only $3.99 on iTunes for a weekend and I purchased it, Alex Stokes' book "Messing With Tourists" is easily the best $4 I've ever spent in my entire life.

Stokes accurately captures the caliber of thought (or lack thereof) present in the average East Tennessee tourist. Given the low-brow nature of the Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area, the kind of person drawn there ranks highly among the dumbest in Tennessee, which (to paraphrase the film "The Big Lebowski") places them high in the running for dumbest nation-wide.

Stokes occasionally comes off a bit harsh to tourists, but fortunately his humor redeems him fully and causes us to empathize with his situation.

He manages to also point out insights into humanity, such as when he hilariously explains that "wilderness" is essentially nature's "petting zoo" (though he advises against petting bears-- advice I'm sure that went unheeded).

We've all been on both the asking end (whether we want to admit it or not) or receiving end of such inquires, and Stokes subtly points this out through amusing anecdotes that toe the line of reality and a dystopian land of rednecks. Interactions with tourists remind the reader of characters in Joseph Heller's "Catch-22" in their circular logic and fallacy (Tourist: Why are there so many hot air balloons? Alex: I haven't seen any. Tourist: Come to think of it, I haven't either.).

If I were to be on a desert island by myself for the rest of my life, I'd bring this book, as many Ernest Hemingway books as I can, and probably one or two books that are really just full of photos of naked ladies but like artsy photos though not smutty ones.

I can't recommend it highly enough.

Once I downloaded it, I couldn't put it down. When my husband came home from work he said he didn't know if I was laughing or crying. I said both. This is a great read and anyone who has ever worked in the service industry has met these kind of people before and wish they could respond so openly.
Hilarious snippets of conversations with tourists in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
Having lived in that area and worked with tourists for many years, I can say that these silly conversations go on all of the time.
A lighthearted and fun read.
Great read for all tourist and for people who work in vacation areas. Great comebacks for real questions by real tourist..
I Couldn't Put it down. I laughed so often my dog was worried about me. I guess I need to laugh more.
This is a short book which best describes what stupid questions some people ask, i.e. "When do they let the bears out (in the Smoky Mtns). It is an easy read.
Very funny! If you have worked with tourist in the Smokey Mountains, a must read. Touron Part tourist, part moron. I highly recommend you buy this book. You can't make up these stories.
seriously, i expected something funny. all 5 star reviews. must be relatives. i've read books about stupid tourist questions, and this doesn't measure up at all. alex comes across as just rude. there are a couple of lines that could have been potentially funny, but he just can't pull it off. he says he answers tourists that ask stupid questions with funny things. but when a tourist asks where he can find a store or a certain item, i don't see that as a stupid question. and alex answers him with just downright rude things. i can see that he thinks he is quite funny himself, but there are absolutely no laugh out load moments in this book. there are hardly even any break a smile, chuckle moments. download the sample, the book is just a repeat of the first story over and over.
